Welcome to the journal section of the website.
Here you will find news about what is happening in my photographic world,
From time to time I post essays and thoughts on photography, along with trends in the industry and the medium, as I see them.
I also share my image-making process here, from conception to completion.
These are my own thoughts, and your opinions are welcome.
A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease. ~John Muir Perhaps I spent too many minutes in what passed for a summer this year (two […]
Dear Red, Portly and Bearded one: I know, I know. I only write to you once a year, but I know you and the elves are busy, so I don’t want to impose. Actually I wasn’t sure you really existed, but after seeing the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy sharing a bottle of Moet […]
Not surprisingly many of the canonical images of early war photography turn out to have been staged, or to have had their subjects tampered with. – Susan Sontag Kia ora tatou: A few days ago, on my Facebook fan page, where I put up all the stuff which really doesn’t need a full post, I […]
If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it. Albert Einstein It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all. Edward de Bono I have been thinking… I know a number of you […]
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it […]
Poised on the pin hinging this millennium to the last, perhaps a little before, perhaps a little after, I began to photograph the city where I have spent most of my life. For most of us, the place where we live becomes as familiar as the back of our hand…and as foreign. It becomes comfortable […]
Kia ora tatou: I have been thinking. Last weekend I was out with a couple of good friends, making photographs. We were bouncing our way along an icy track when an image, an arrangement of relationships, of time and space, caught my attention and asked me to make it (that is the way it happens, […]
So many people dislike themselves so thoroughly that they never see any reproduction of themselves that suits. None of us is born with the right face. It’s a tough job being a portrait photographer. – Imogen Cunningham A portrait! What could be more simple and more complex, more obvious and more profound. – Charles Baudelaire […]
Have you been thinking about travelling to Tibet? I came across some tips for photography in Tibet. it is obviously not written by a native English speaker…at least, I hope not. I sense the PRFH’s ( Proof Reader From Hell) ascending from the Stygian Regions to exact punishment. I dare him/her to comment here… Note […]
For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver. ~Martin Luther Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky, We fell them down and turn them into paper, That we may record our emptiness. ~Kahlil Gibran […]
The air is sacred. Our DNA is made of the same DNA as the tree. The tree breathes what we exhale; when the tree exhales, we need what the tree exhales. So we have a common destiny with the tree. -Red Crow When the sand in the hourglass of autumn is running low, go outside. […]
Being in photography for any length of time means that each of us, sooner or later, will be forced to wade the shifting sands of composition. All of us will have been exposed to the so-called “rules” of composition, either through judging or through our own study. There are, in fact, gazillions of books on the subject. I had several ourselves, but somehow I have managed to successfully lend them to the sort of people who never give them back.
The phone went around 10pm last Tuesday night. It was a picture agency based in London, wanting to hire me to cover the earthquake. I did not hear it until Friday. And I am glad. I was far too busy and anxious, working my way through the concentric circles of my own network. Firstly my […]

All photography is a journey. The joyous thing about photography is that it is a journey that never ends. Wherever we are on the journey, there is always something new to learn. Sometimes we can do that by ourselves, at other times we need to seek guidance. At times like this it can be really […]
